2.7.5.a Rejuvenation

What does rejuvenation entail?

Rejuvenation (sometimes called re-trunking) is a technique which consists in removing the trunk in order to create a new trunk from a shoot. This technique can be used in order to completely restore trunk formation, for example, if the trunk is too high, there are many pruning wounds, or the vine has become constricted. Re-trunking may also be necessary if the vine presents symptoms of a wood disease, Wood disease and virus management in such instances, all diseased wood must be removed.

In which cases is it relevant to carry out a forced rejuvenation?

Forced rejuvenation can reduce the damage caused by wood diseases. This method has proved to be very relevant in the fight against eutypiosis, and to a lesser extent against esca if the latter has not reached the whole trunk. Re-trunking is a destructive practice that should be implemented as much as possible for varieties that easily form shoots, such as Merlot, but not Ugni blanc or Riesling. The age of the vines should also be considered: a young vine will generally produce vine shoots more easily than an older vine.
