2.3.4.b How many times is lifting carried out and how long does it take?

This operation can be done gradually, in two or three stages, depending on the vine's growth and vigour, and the trellis height. The steps can be different depending on the type of trellising:

  • If the trellising is fixed, then it is sufficient to lift the vines by hand and insert them between the wires, being careful to separate them from one another to avoid leaving any spaces or any crowding of the vegetation.

  • If the trellis is mobile, then it is not the branches that are moved but the trellis wires that are raised as the vine grows. This method makes it possible to keep the vegetation vertical more quickly because the trellising wires can be raised, which avoids bending the branches.

The time required to raise the trellis wires varies depending on the number of rounds on the plot, the planting density, the type of trellis, the vine's vigour as well as the period when it is carried out.

Should spacers be used to facilitate trellising?

To ensure that the vegetation is as vertical as possible as early as possible, thereby avoiding any branches drooping under their own weight, it is possible to facilitate lifting with the use of spacers or staples that widen or tighten the wires for optimal support of the branches during growth. There are different types of spacers available from various companies.
