Varietal selection
Ideally, the grape variety planted should be identical to the predominant grape variety in the plot to facilitate green harvesting (same pruning) and to reduce how many rounds are required during the harvest (Additional time required when multiple rounds are planned.). Nevertheless, it is possible to choose several clones of the same grape variety in order to diversify the plant material.
Chateau Latour advocates genetic diversity during replacement planting, mainly by massal selection for the Enclos. For the outer plots, mixed clones are chosen according to their desired agronomic properties.
At Clos de Tart, a collection of Pinot Noir is also present and routinely used for replacement planting.
