2.6.3.b Which liming product should be used?

Should treated or untreated products be used?

The products used for liming exist in different forms for which the content varies as well as the speed of action.
A distinction is made between untreated products (limestone, chalk, marl) and treated products (quicklime, magnesium quicklime, etc.). The latter have a much faster speed of action.
To differentiate the speed of action of the different untreated products, it is necessary to take into account the fineness and carbonic solubility. The fineness is defined by the NFU 44-001 standard. The finer the product used, the faster its action.
As for the carbonic solubility, the higher it is, the faster the action.

Carbon solubilitySpeed of operations
Over 50Quick acting
Between 20 and 50Average acting
Below 20Slow acting

Slower action is often preferred when planting. For existing vines, rapid action is preferred, particularly in the case of corrective liming.

Should the soil also be enriched with magnesium?

When the K/Mg ratio is low, an application of magnesium lime is appropriate to rebalance the soil and avoid deficiencies. Different types of products can be used and can be chosen according to requirements.

Untreated products
Crushed limestone45 to 55% of CaO
Chalks50 to 55% of CaO
Dolomites20 to 30 of CaO and 12 to 21% of MgO
Marls25 to 45% of CaO
Untreated products
Agricultural quicklime70 to 90% of CaO
Magnesium quicklime45 to 75% of CaO and 18 to 40% of CaO

However, care must be taken not to go too far in the opposite direction and block the assimilation of potassium with an excess of magnesium lime.
